This is a site for me to compile notes and code looking at insulin pump and CGM data. My goal is to gain a better understanding of how insulin and blood glucose interact, specifically for my daughter, and maybe even figure out how to better manage her diabetes.

The Jupyter notebooks and code all live on my github “sugar” repository: https://github.com/michellejw/sugar.

Here’s the equipment I’m working with:

I have a Glooko account where data from both of these devices is collated and analyzed. As awesome as it is, I don’t always see exactly the information I want to see on the Glooko site which is what prompted me to do my own data crunching. Glooko has a nice export feature where you can export all of your data (basal, bolus, cgm, alarms, etc.) into several csv files. I’ve basically dumped this data as-is into the data folder in my “sugar” github repo.

There are a lot of different apps and companies out there with full time developers and scientists writing algorithms to look at this type of data. Which is AWESOME. Also, sometimes it helps me to just get my head into a dataset and look at it every which way I can think of. I’m sharing this on github so that anyone who’s interested can see every bit of code, and can step through the process with me on my github pages site.

On a personal level, I’m doing this because we’re about three months into my 5-year-old daughter’s diagnosis (as of mid-February 2023) and we are struggling to get her numbers even remotely under control. It’s frustrating, and I almost don’t want to share this data because the numbers are so… not good. But I am sharing anyway because (a) maybe it’ll help someone else, and (b) when we eventually do get things under (better) control, I’ll be able to look at this data and remember how bad it used to be :-)
